The Healthcare Executive Title Trap: 8 Jobs That Aren't What They Sound Like

Healthcare has a title problem.

A “VP of Operations” at one organization might oversee three facilities. At another, it could mean 40 locations and a nine-figure operating budget.

A “Chief Clinical Officer” might be responsible for clinical quality across an entire enterprise. Somewhere else, the role may be almost entirely administrative.

The title tells you something.

It just doesn't tell you enough.

1. Chief Operating Officer

COO can mean second-in-command. It can also mean the person responsible for turning a founder's vision into an actual operating system.

Scope matters more than the letters on the business card.

2. VP of Operations

This title gets especially slippery in healthcare.

Is the executive running one region? Multiple states? A portfolio of facilities? Central operations? The answer completely changes the candidate profile.

3. Chief Clinical Officer

Clinical leadership isn't one-size-fits-all.

A CCO may oversee nursing, quality, clinical strategy and outcomes. In another organization, the role may center on physician leadership and clinical integration.

4. Chief Medical Officer

A CMO can be a practicing physician with limited administrative responsibility or a true enterprise executive helping shape strategy, growth and operations.

Same title. Very different search.

5. Executive Director

This one causes trouble constantly.

An Executive Director running a single senior living community is not interchangeable with an executive overseeing a large regional portfolio.

6. Regional Director

How regional is “regional”?

Five locations? Twenty-five? One state? Four?

The number of buildings matters. So does revenue, census, staffing complexity and reporting structure.

7. Chief Strategy Officer

Strategy can mean M&A, market expansion, partnerships, growth, analytics or some combination of all five.

A strategy executive who has never touched acquisitions may be completely wrong for a company entering an aggressive growth phase.

8. Chief Growth Officer

“Growth” can mean sales. It can mean new markets. It can mean acquisitions. It can mean developing entirely new revenue channels.

Before evaluating the candidate, figure out what the company actually means by growth.

The Real Job Description Is Bigger Than the Title

This is why executive search in the healthcare industry requires more than matching titles.

The right candidate isn't necessarily the person who has held the exact same position. It's the person who has already operated at the scale, complexity and mandate your organization needs.

At Premier Search, we look beyond titles to understand what an executive has actually been responsible for: the size of the operation, the teams they've led, the problems they've solved and the results they've produced.

Because “VP of Operations” is not a qualification. It's a starting point.
