Consumer Health Doesn't Need a CPG Executive… It Needs the Right Kind of CPG Executive
A consumer health company can hire an executive with an impressive CPG résumé and still make the wrong hire.
The candidate may have built recognizable brands, expanded retail distribution, launched new products, and managed large commercial teams. Those are valuable skills. But consumer health sits at an unusual intersection: it has to compete like a consumer brand while earning trust in a category where science, safety, and credibility matter.
That distinction changes the executive hiring equation.
CPG experience doesn't always transfer
A traditional CPG executive may know how to win shelf space, sharpen brand positioning, optimize pricing, and drive repeat purchases. But can that person navigate the realities of a product whose claims require scientific substantiation? Can they work effectively with regulatory, medical, or clinical teams? Do they understand why consumer trust can be harder to build, and more costly to lose, when a product makes health-related promises?
These aren't reasons to rule out CPG candidates. They're reasons to evaluate the right experience rather than relying on industry pedigree.
The reverse is also true. A leader from a traditional healthcare organization may understand clinical credibility and regulatory complexity but lack the commercial instincts required to build a consumer-facing brand. Knowing healthcare doesn't automatically mean knowing consumers.
The hiring question is about the company's next stage
The right background depends on what the business needs next.
A company expanding into national retail may need a leader who has scaled distribution and managed retail economics. A science-led brand trying to earn mainstream consumer trust may need someone who can translate technical credibility into a compelling consumer proposition. A business moving from founder-led growth to a more sophisticated commercial operation may need a leader who can build repeatable systems without losing what made the brand distinctive.
The job title alone won't tell you which profile is right. Neither will a résumé filled with familiar company names.
This is where consumer health executive search requires a more precise approach than simply recruiting from a list of competing brands. The search has to start with the company's commercial priorities, the complexity of its category, and the capabilities its current leadership team lacks.
The goal isn't to find someone who has worked in consumer health before. It's to find someone whose experience matches the specific challenge ahead.
That may be a CPG executive with relevant health-category experience, a healthcare leader with proven consumer instincts, or a candidate whose career bridges both worlds.
The strongest hire isn't necessarily the most obvious one. It's the person who can connect commercial performance with the realities of selling products people use to make decisions about their health.
